Teyana Taylor has recently made headlines about her new pregnancy with longtime NBA boyfriend, Iman Shumpert. However, she still continues to remain as one of the most underrated R&B artists in the game. With her last mixtape titled The Cassette Tape 1994, Teyana showcases her powerful vocal ability, strong writing skills, and her chameleon-like ability to switch up her flows from soothing R&B crooner to hip hop connoisseur. She has a long history of living and breathing music, all the way back in the day when she was 16 years old and working with Pharrell, and has crowned Aaliyah as her main inspiration.
Teyana Taylor’s new mixtape is one of my favorite releases this year, and truly hasn’t garnered the attention it deserves. With absolutely no features, you get a chance to understand Teyana as an artist and woman, which is what music is all about. Kanye has called Teyana “exactly what R&B needs right now,” cosigning the Harlem-born singer as a talented act on the rise. After her famous performance at SOB’s in New York City, people finally began to understand what Kanye was talking about. She’s got vocals to kill, dance moves to match, and impeccable style that will want you to find out exactly where this fashionista shops.
One of my favorite songs off of The Cassette Tape 1994 is “Undercover,” which isn’t your typical R&B song, but definitely pays homage to a few famous artists. You can see where Teyana pulls her inspiration from – old school crooners like Patti LaBelle, legends like Aaliyah and Pharrell, and her own flavor, making for a unique signature sound you can’t find anywhere else.
If you don’t know who Teyana is now, you better get familiar because the mommy to be is making waves in an industry that has no water.
