My favorite part about discovering new music on Soundcloud is that you never know what you’re going to find. From the hottest hip hop remixes to insane original tracks from people you’ve never heard of, there are always gems in the sonic sea that is Soundcloud. This time around, I am introducing you to Ekali, a Vancouver born and raised DJ with a knack for adding musical color to the world around him. His sounds are unique, with an effervescent blend of chilled out music to songs that will have you making those weird ‘YAAAAS’ faces when you hear something that just bangs. (Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about).
If that doesn’t convince you enough, Ekali’s Soundcloud has over 38,000 followers with an average of a few hundred thousand plays per song, his most recent, a collaborative remix with Gravez of Florida’s own Denzel Curry’s banger “Threatz.” Together, Ekali and Gravez combine their different styles to create an insanely awesome team.
I came across a dope interview that Pigeons and Planes did with Ekali, where he gave some thoughtful answers on the evolving state of music. When they asked him if he considers himself more apart of the global online community or the music scene in Vancouver, he was able to shed some light on the current state of music in his hometown. Ekali explained that Vancouver hasn’t really had the best music scene and continued to explain that it is very segregated rather than communal. However, Ekali also said that there was a new venue that opened up in Vancouver that has a new R&B night, and they have been able to showcase more up and coming talent that wouldn’t normally get the chance to play, which is something The Blair List can most definitely appreciate. As for dream collabs, Ekali explains that Frank Ocean and Bjork are at the top of the list.
When he isn’t touring, Ekali spends his time at the Red Bull Academy for Music in Tokyo, Japan, where I’m sure he has garnered inspiration for his projects to come.
